It was a natural outgrowth of the relationship between scouting and Islamic organizations that the religious emblems program was originated to give recognition to youth who had demonstrated religious growth. In 1965 the Federation of Islamic Association issued the “In The Name of God” emblem for Boy Scouts and Venturers who are Muslim.

In 1981 an organization were formed by the concerned Muslim for the promotion of the scouting in Muslim community in New York which was Chaired by Dr. Muzamil Siddiqui, at The Muslim World League, UN Office in New York and an adhoc committee were formed by the name of “Islamic Council on Scouting of North America” under the leader ship of Syed Ehtesham Haider Naqvi.

In 1982 the adhoc committee submitted their recommendations to the community at the office of the Organization of Islamic Council under the leadership of its UN Ambassador Mr. Youssouf Sylla to formed National Islamic Committee on Scouting and Mr. Sylla have been chosen as a Chairman where as the President of the Council were chosen Mr. Syed Ehtesham H. Naqvi who form the organization.

Since these emblems were designed and implemented by the Islamic Council on Scouting and not by the Boy Scouts of America, it is appropriate that they be presented during a religious service at a youth's activity at Islamic Center or Mosque.

Scouts and Scouters who earn or are awarded a religious emblem/award are entitled to wear a "knot" on their uniform.  This includes Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Venturers.  There are separate knots shown below for youth and adults.  Adults who earned a religious emblem as a youth are encouraged to wear the adult knot on their uniform.
